End of Day 2

Well I guess I’m about where I hoped to be. Technically this is the midway point b/c I had the half day Friday and I’ll have the half day Monday. And to be honest, I may be about half done.

However, here’s the snag: I’ve divided it into pieces with a word count goal of about 60k (which is roughly 100 pages, the target goal according to the website). I plan to have 5 pieces, one for each month. The fourth and fifth pieces (April and May) will combine to be about 15k and the other three piece should be about 15k. However part 2 (February) currently comes up a couple thousand words short. My hope is that part 3 (March, for which I have, like a line written) will be bigger than I expect. It looks like part 1 (January) may be longer than 15k. So yay!

There’s also the fact that it’s really hard to tell what’s going to happen until I get there. Today I got stuck a time or two (okay, maybe more) so I worked on individual scenes instead of going in a chronological way. And knowing we were going out tonight (very briefly, thankfully — ooh hey. Two adverbs side by side), I decided to save one of my Big Scenes to write this evening. It went okay. There’s not as much emotion in it as I’d hoped.

However, the deal is that Seth is not an emotional person. I turned up in my research that it would be completely in character for great emotional events to barely register with him. It’s also in character for minor things to affect him deeply. So that’s where I’m going with some of these big scenes. I fear that they’re going to be to “tell-y” but this is his voice.

And a part of me says, “What are the chances that this will be published as a Three-Day Novel? You have lots of time to work it out.” So the editor in me says, “I hope you don’t win.” The writer in me isn’t sure what she wants. Other than one of these Jack Daniels Hard Colas she saw advertised during the Clemson-Georgia game tonight. Serves her right for going to a bar when she was supposed to be working.
