Fired by e-mail

Yes I know I just posted what was to be today’s Big Entry but I read this over at Huffington Post and I had to share.

You ought to go read it, as it’s short & snarky, but here’s what you need to know to enjoy the rest of my post:

This is a copy of the e-mail from Mark Hoffman received by “Dennis Miller” staffers at 2:02 pm PDT. Hoffman is the President of CNBC — Kevin Bleyer’s employer until 2:03 pm PDT.

I was once fired via e-mail. From a a volunteer job (”How do you get fired from a volunteer job?” “I don’t know. I was just talking to the man…”).

I won’t go into all the stupidity surrounding the “dismissal” but I wanted to say this: it was an online community. As a “leader,” I had a special e-mail account. The person “in charge” fired me, Theryn and Deoris all at the same time, via e-mail sent to those special e-mail addresses. Then, since we were “fired,” she blocked access to the e-mail accounts. So we were fired but had no way to know that we were fired b/c we couldn’t open the e-mail account with the dismissal note inside.

That’s funny.

At the time, we were all shaking with fury but that was a long time ago (and a few highly-effective spells ago, lemme tell ya). From the ashes of that phoenix rose Toasted Cheese and the online community has tanked. They’re a laughing stock now, full of pop-up ads and virtual hugs and brownies. Well, they had the virtual hugs and brownies before but now that’s all that it is. At least as far as I’ve ever been able to stand to explore.

So I know that it happens fairly frequently but even I’m a little surprised that CNBC doesn’t have the sack to fire people in person. I’m more surprised that Dennis Miller’s show was still on the air.
