Christmas run-down

Photos are here.

Christmas Eve completely ended at Chez Piggyhawk at 4:30 a.m. Christmas morning was under way at 7 a.m. when Zoe woke up. New rule: No Christmas before the sun is up ;) Anyway, she thought she might go back to sleep in our bed. When I said, “Do you want to go see if Santa came?” she bumped me and said, “Be quiet and go to sleep Mommy.” Heh. I wonder where she gets that. Anyway, Holden started to stir at 7:30 so we got up. It was still dark so I had the video camera going, flipped the light on and Z said, “The colors!” Meaning the tree, which is on the light switch. Then it was “Toys! Look, Mommy. What happened here? Toys!” She headed straight for the play kitchen and the bag of play food.

First thing this morning

I taped her & took a couple of photos, then went for Holden.

Ooh hey a cup

In the meantime, Hawk decided not to miss this and got up and poured himself a big ol’ Mountain Dew.

On three hours of sleep

Holden went for Dora and Diego, which Zoe had pulled over to the kitchen. He checked them both out and then went for his Zoo Choo-choo. He pushed the button so much that Zoe has the songs memorized now. They helped Daddy set up the Shake N Go Race Track.

Racetrack

Intermittently, they went back to the kitchen.

Kitchen

Zoe loved opening the wrapped gifts and helped a little with Holden’s. Holden was not the least bit interested in anything he couldn’t immediately play with: out of paper, out of box and assembled. So he played kitchen until things were ready for him.

Zoe went wild for (1) Lightning McQueen bubble bath (2) Backyardigans Pirate Ship (3) train set. The train set is the same maker & gauge as the one she got last Christmas so the sets can go together.

So far she’s played with the kitchen & play food (she’s wearing her chef hat), the racetrack (currently playing with that), her Lego-like blocks (hers are Little Mermaid, Holden’s are a helicopter), her Toy Story plushies (they’re in the Groovy Girls car with a couple of the new Groovy Girls and the Groovy Girls dog Gramma Callie sent), and the Backyardigans coloring kit. She opened the Toy Story bath paint b/c I think she thought it was paint-paint.

Santa brought a board game (”Sorry!”) for the family and an Atari Flashback 2.He also filled stockings for everyone. Z & H haven’t opened theirs yet. Santa brought D&D figs for Hawk. I got some knitting books and candy from Santa. Everyone got a sugarplum beside his/her stocking.

For Hawk, I got steel gaming dice (watch out D&D buds), fancy-ass LL Bean slippers, a cold souldering gun, some books (including the celebrity Playbook book) and the new iPod mini. For me, Hawk got some CDs, some DVDs (including “Rollergirls” — yes!), some books and a lovely necklace I haven’t yet taken a photo of. It’s very simple: both of the kids’ birthstones, one over the other, on a gold chain. He had it made, y’all. Between that & the Playboy book, we may be able to overcome the power of The Sweater.

Speaking of which…

Flora did not quite trump The Sweater but she got me a sweatshirt w/ a glittery snowflake on it (it’s pink) and an argyle sweater w/ a faux shirt underneath. Now that I may have been able to pull of b/c I like the colors & I have one of those “faux shirt sweater” things. It is however not only a size L but a size L petite. Petite. I am 5′7″ tall. Also it is so thin that holding it up you can see hrough both layers of it. So on me it would be indecent. Maybe I’ll keep it. Of course neither can be returned to any store.

For Hawk, she got him a long sleeved dress shirt: blue ginham checks. Now I have told her repeatedly: (1) do not buy him dress clothes, as he takes a size tall and only buys his shirts from Land’s End and (2) don’t get anything w/ a pattern b/c it can give him a migraine. So, yeah. She bought him a

nightmare in the form of a dress shirt. And as he said, it’s not from JCP either so now we can’t even get a gift card for it. At least before we could return her ridiculous crap and get gift cards (b/c there were no gift receipts). The stuff for the kids is from JCP but is cute so I’ll be keeping that.

From their friends Rhi & Bran (offspring of S&S), Z & H got a game, a “circus truck” (Z is currently opening that) and some way cute clothes. I got my favorite chocolate (dark flaky Choxie truffles) and some yummy-smelling stuff, including bath pearls, which I had looked for when we visited Wal-Mart last weekend b/c I didn’t know where to find any. Hawk got a gift card, with which he is inordinately pleased. I believe Hawk gave S A gift card as well. I gave S a knitting starter set. She said she’d wanted to learn when she saw me knitting once. I got her a copy of Stitch N Bitch, a couple of non-wool yarns (didn’t know if she might be allergic) that match, size 10 bamboo needles, a stitch counter, stitch markers, a gauge counter, a pendant cutter (don’t you love those? I need another for my embroidery) and a thing of hand cream. As you know, you need hand cream in your knitting kit. I looked everywhere for unscented cream; the best I could do was a Neutrogena.

From Gramma Callie, the kids got Shake & Go cars (they go with the racetrack) and Groovy Girls. For us she made a donation: http://www.southwestindian.com/swindian/sitelite.nsf Niiice.

We haven’t exchanged gifts w/ the Bumblefuck gang. I don’t even remember what we got for them. I had gotten vibrating slippers for Char & then I remembered she had wanted tarot cards so I got her a great starter pack that includes the info for the meaning of each card ON the card. Wish I’d had that. Anyway, I also got her slipper socks (shout out to The Ref) and some Burt’s Bees stuff. Bets is getting a new cordless phone & an Elvis CD. Jed is getting a CD, Scooter is getting a plug-in flashlight (it stores plugged in and if the power goes out, it becomes an automatic nightlight) and K-Dawg is getting a CD. All three of them are also getting gift cards. The Things are getting Toys R Us gift cards and some BrainQuest cards. I was pretty peeved about them breaking our furniture and some of Z&H’s toys plus they’re not doing so well in school so… educational toys! Whoo! Actually Z&H also got BrainQuest cards. I think they’re cool but I’m a geek.

Well I’m off to assemble toys, etc. There’s a special place in hell for the Fisher Price product designers. They want to display the toys a certain way that requires about a dozen wire twistees per package. They’ll spend eternity untwisting them.

  • I spent a good hour JUST removing things from boxes, AND got a wicked huge CARDBOARD cut under my finger nail.

    Sigh…

  • Merry Christmas, y’all!

  • Assembly… a parents Christmas nightmare. It’s now 5:00 and we just finished assembling ONE thing. Ugh.

  • Okay, I’m thinking I should make up an apron at the store that says “Krapmore Kitchen” and send it to Zoe.

(If you aren’t reading Top Chef TWOP - that probably didn’t make much sense…but it’s funny to me. And probably to Zoe. I know she reads TWOP.)

  • Don’t watch. After “Project Runway” ended, I was too depressed to watch anything else.

  • Awww…..That kitchen rocks! We got the Backyardigans Pirate Ship and Groovys too. Plus Groovy minis. We also managed to completely redecorate my old Barbie house, which pleases me more than it should.

Sounds like you had a fabulous Christmas. (Santa assembles the gifts Christmas Eve here. It helps with the only interested if I can touch it NOW factor.)

  • Ok, why did none of you tell me that getting that pirate ship out would be harder than breaking into Fort Knox. Did the person in the twist tie department get bored? Was there a contest for most creative twist tying? Jebus!

  • That Backyardigans ship was nothing. You should try the Little People Pirate ship. Anything Little People is wired like mad. If it were Little People, Pablo & Uniqua would have had two wires each, plus the treasure chest.

Assembling a big attractive item (kitchen, last year the washing machine) keeps them busy while we spend the entire day assembling other stuff. Last night at 10 p.m. I was doing the Little Tykes workbench (Santa got a great deal on that — only $10).

  • I covet your washing machine.

And you’re right about the Little People. We have that ship (along with so many other sets it’s embarrassing) and holy fuck!

Glad you had a good day, Eden. Can’t wait to hear about Bumblefuck; it’ll ease my own pain of spending the day with the Nutjob and assorted other relatives who tolerate me. And I’m not even talking about in-laws.

  • Love the daddy pic! ;)

  • The castle was easy to get out-but the pet shop and police station took a good 30 MINUTES. UNbelievable.

  • There’s a pet shop? Must have!

  • Oh and Hawk said about the Daddy pic: “I’m a hairy sonuvabitch.”

    Well, yeah.
