ETN article is up

Here it is, complete with monoquote. If you need a login, go to bugmenot.com

My quote: “I remember five, six years ago that there was this concern that the Internet would turn people into hermits,” said Lenz, who now lives near Altoona and did not attend the most recent meeting. “But what seems to have happened is that it’s created a community that helps people connect and, in Erie anyway, has translated into real friendships.”

The exerpts are from my “Holden — 14 months” entry*. Not a sample of a typical entry for me. It makes it sound like a mommyblog (I prefer “mom who blogs” myself, since only a small percentage of entries are about the kids). Perhaps they couldn’t find an entry suitable for quoting in a newspaper. I think they could have but oh well.

Cute photos of Jen & Michael :)

A long time coming. Thanks for the hits.

You’re personally invited to scroll down, comb the archives, etc. and get a sense of the blog: chock full of four letter words, non-mainstream ideas and opinions and a whole hell of a lot of Joaquin Phoenix. Enjoy & come back as often as ya like. And check out the blogroll (sidebar, on right) for lots more Erie Bloggers (and non-Erie bloggers).

* ETA: That was an entry I threw together the next day, realizing I hadn’t written his 14 mo update. I backdated it and there it was. The main post for the same day was, you guessed it, “Sex For The Married Woman.”

ETA2: For some reason, there’s discussion about this under an unrelated thread. To enjoy, go here.

  • I think my shoes quote from my actual blog isn’t my normal stuff either… but I guess it captured my random topics? I had the interviewer cracking up on the phone over an inflammed tastebud post… I was pleased with everything else though… ok, I’m not sure my pictures are the most photogenic pictures that have ever been taken of me but I’m getting good reviews so far…

  • I thought the blog quotes were odd choices as well, for everyone involved. Especially yours, Eden–that sounds like the stuff I usually write! ;) And you are definitely more of a “mom who blogs” than a “mommy blogger”. But hopefully the article will get people to visit our sites and see what each one is really about.

  • Yeah scuttlebutt via e-mail is all about the atypical exerpts. People reading mine might be thinking, “Oh what a sweet blog about being a mom and what the kids do… *click* What the hell is this?”

  • Cool article. I agree- you are not a “mommy blogger.” That would be yours truly. I’m trying to integrate more of my personal journey… that said, I have an entry to make about Molly’s first tooth:/ However, teething baby generally leads to nipple discussion, so that’s kinda personal…lol

Thanks for turning me onto bugmenot.com- had no idea that existed. Also, it’s so nice to know there are openly gay pagans in Erie. Seems to me that’s as brave as being out in WV, which can be scary and very occasionally harmful to one’s health.

    Blog on peeps.

  • I am reminded of a post on Datalounge (gay gossip blog.) The topic was something like “What would your grandmother post if she found Datalounge.”

“Oh my. What does NSFW stand for next to this link here? {clicks, then clutches chest in shock} SWEET JESUS!!!” (NSFW is Not Safe For Work, of course. It’s used when someone has a link on an entry that um, maybe one’s grandmother shouldn’t see.)

Thanks for the kind words, Heidi! I have been openly gay in local media for 15 years and openly Pagan for 10 years. Just doing my bit to piss off the Pat Robertsons and Jerry Falwells of the world.

Considering you have six years of archived blog entries, and estimating just one blog entry per day (though, you usually have several per day) but just for the purpose of deriving the most conservative number possible, the writers of the ETN article were looking at 2,190 (one per day over 6 years)blog entries to choose from. That’s not including the thousands of entries from the other featured bloggers they had to look through for a random sample.

That’s just the conservative number for your blog alone, whereas the actual number is more than likely between 5,000 and 10,000, if not even much higher. Given the sheer volume of blog entries to go through, I wonder how you, as a writer yourself, would determine the one short paragraph that would be the best representative sample of who you are as just one of several ErieBloggers “Eden of ErieBlogs” which was your context within the story.

And considering your blog entries range anywhere from talking about your adorable kids (I mean that sincerely….I adore Zoe’s “my prrrrrresssshhhhiiiiiissssshhhhhh video and frequently comment on how well you capture your kids in your photos) to talking about your love of porn and posting pictures of your underwear and sex toys; to looking up an old boyfiriend and making contact with him; to posting “blogthings” surveys; to Oscar picks; to baking shortbread cookies; to talking about how you smell like grapefruit; or to a myriad of other topics that move you to write about…..

    1) As a writer yourself, how many blog threads would you have read through?

    2) How far back would you have gone through the archives? You archives alone would fill more than one large book. In fact, each of the featured bloggers’ entries would fill their own large books.

    3) If the writers had asked you to provide one short paragraph, which one would you have chosen that would sum up Eden of ErieBlogs? Keep in mind that the entry needs to be short, i.e. a few sentences.

    4) Do you think the writers of that story should have read what amounts to a large book on each of the ErieBloggers before choosing a random sample from random writings on random thoughts? I’m not sure how they chose which bloggers to feature, but it’s possible even they were all chosen randomly, as well.

    5) Regardless of what the story could have been, (how it could have been turned into “a series” as you say) given that it was just an interest piece, what would you have done differently?

  • Somebody has waaaay too much time on her hands.

  • Yeah and it’s not me. Just refuting the mistakes in that comment would take more time than I feel like devoting to her.

Lil, how can we miss you if you don’t go away?

  • kimberly says: “Somebody has waaaay too much time on her hands.”

It’s not unusual for writers to ask lots of questions and even less unusual for them to spend lots of time writing when they are working on a project. I’ve written a little about the project on
Michael Mahler’s Ditherings’ blog on ErieBlogs.com today under the thread titled: “anonymity, privacy and personae.” He had an excellent commentary on the subject.

What’s your reason for spending so much time here, kimberly? Is it possible you are the one with a little too much time on your hands?

  • Oh knock it the fuck off already.

  • Lilith, you clearly think you are way more intelligent and thoughtprovoking and interesting than anyone here finds you. So why not go where you’re appreciated, if in fact, such a place exists.

As to why I’m here, well, Eden is awesome. The very fact you need to ask shows just how little you “get it.”
