You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy

The USPS is participating in Star Wars mania w/ R2D2 mailboxes! This is teh awesome!

It has been SW mania around here for about a week. HBO was running SW movies like mad and Z took to it. In a huge way. We watched ep4 3 times yesterday afternoon. She’s memorizing it. Her line yesterday was “A transport! I’m saved! Over here!” She loves C3PO and Darth Vader.

I was only two years older than she is when I went to see SW in the theater almost 30 years ago. I pestered my parents until we drove an hour up to Tallahassee to Capital Cinema to see it. I spent this first half an hour telling my mother what all the people & vehicles were called (I had a comic book at home so I already knew all of that stuff). Finally I told her I wanted a landspeeder and she said I had to be quiet and watch the movie.

About half an hour in, Luke is attacked by sandpeople and one of them raises his weapon overhead & chants. At that moment, Flora gave her opinion of Star Wars: “Oh for god’s sake.” She never took me to a movie like that again. My dad took me to see Empire, the Indiana Jones movies, Time Bandits, The Dark Crystal, E.T. etc. She would go if it was something like The Muppet Movie or a Disney rerelease. Yes kids, you used to be able to see the old Disney cartoons in the theater from time to time.

So anyway…

I loved Star Wars. I loved everything about it except Luke Skywalker. I thought he was wishy washy. When I played w/ my Death Star playset, I would sacrifice Luke to the garbage monster, prop Obi-Wan up against the power thingy and have Han & Leia make out until his head popped off. I went through at least three Hans. I had a Barbie-sized Leia, an R2D2 punching bag (you know, it had sand on the bottom and popped back up when you punched it) and a Millennium Falcon: the world’s coolest toy. I had all the ep 4 figures and when I tried to finangle an extra stormtrooper or X-wing pilot, it didn’t work. Flora hated Star Wars and everything about it.

She did however make me a Leia Halloween costume. She used a nightgown pattern. I specified that it had to have a hood and I had my hair done up in Hopi princess buns and I carried a “blaster.” It was the best costume ever b/c I was obsessed w/ the details of it.

I told Zoe she can be Leia for Halloween, if she’s still on the kick. Being the 30th anniversary year, I’m sure SW will be hot again this year. I keep trying to get Hawk into a Han costume but he says it’s no good unless I do the gold bikini. I told him to put together the exercise equipment we bought in January and I will. Holden can be Luke. Or Yoda. Either way.

So we’ve been enjoying SW. Hawk happily bought the kids some figurines on Tuesday (droids). He also bought himself some BSG ships (I said, “Are you going to make them fight?” He was like, “Well duh.”) and took note of what to get the kids next week. We’ve also discussed our favorite lines, b/c SW & TESB actually have good lines (if I had a dollar for every time we’ve done the “stop that / stop what / my hands are dirty / my hands are dirty too” exchange, I could buy myself a sail barge w/ drink-serving droid).

I think my fave lines in SW are Leia’s. You can’t beat “Into the garbage chute, Flyboy!” or “I don’t know who you are or where you came from but from now on, you listen to me” or “You came in that thing? You’re braver than I thought.” I love the character too. As you know, she’s got a lot of spirit.

Hawk does Han & Vader’s lines most frequently. The Luke line we do most often is “But I was going into Tosche Station to pick up some power converters.” Hawk also tries to do the Force choke me but I have considerable resistance in a Leia-like way.

So what’s your fave SW line (ep 4 only; we’ll do Empire another day*) and/or character?

* Oh what the hell — mix up all your Star Wars fave lines & characters & comment or put on your blog. It’ll be a fun weekend thing.

This means I’m breaking out: “I’m Lando Calrissian. I’m the administrator of this facility.”

“Do. Or do not. There is no try.”

And, of course:

Leia: “I love you.”

Han: “I know.”

  • “…scruffy looking nerf herder!
    Who’s scruffy looking?”
    and
    “Laugh it up, fuzzball!”

  • Okay, if you’re going to whip out “Laugh it up, fuzzball,” I’ll allow Empire quotes. B/c that’s a fave @ Chez Piggyhawk too ;)

  • Heh…Rand and I just talked about the gold bikini. During the conversation, he asked if I’d wear the gold bikini at a convention. “Um, no.” I said. “But think of all the attention you’d get,” he replied.

    “Um, no.”

    ;)

  • Oh!! How long until someone steals one and sells it on eBay?

Star Wars was the first movie I saw in a theater. (Grew up in middle of nowhere, so it was a very big deal.)

  • I use it frequently and often in everyday situations. “Is there anything I can do?” “Not unless you can alter time, speed up the harvest and teleport me off this rock.”

    I’m usually at work.

  • Our most common ones are TESB…but we have been known to say, “the force is strong with one” in reference to the pooch.

  • “Do. Or do not. There is no try.”

I hear this one all the time from my darling husband. Never gets old.

  • Oh, and it seems I forgot the word “this.” It’s “the force is strong with this one.” Apparently, I have lost the ability to type well.

  • “Adventure. Heh! Excitement. Heh! A Jedi craves not these things.”

I beat Matt playing Star Wars Trivial Pursuit once. It was awesome.

  • Hello! I came completely randomly here, but I couldn’t resist commenting (I usually read a bit of the blogs I comment in, beforehand).

Best line in TESB? It has to be “And THAT is why you fail”, after look stares at his ship in disbelief, saved back from the swamps of Dagobah.

We (my wife and I) use it very frequently for a quick retort, such as:

“I don’t feel like cooking today”
“And THAT is why you fail!”.

    Priceless! :-)

  • Ooh that’s good. We never use that. I think I’ll break that out tonight. Yoda does have a lot of great lines, plus it’s fun just to say things in Yodaspeak. Hungry I am. A cheeseburger you will bring me, yes? Mmm?
