Craft project: Fortress Press T-shirt

It’s so hard to get photos of my repurposed shirts. Anyway, I basically cut the sleeves off, cut inches off the bottom, cut open the neck and put grommets at the back so I could tighten it at the waist.

Details: I used another shirt as a template for the length and the neck shaping. Then I reshaped the neck a bit, with a bit more of a scoop and then a slight V at the front midpoint.

For the sleeves, I noticed that the seam ended at kind of a juliet-length so I just used a hem ripper to take off the sleeves.

I pinned it in the back at the waist, a few inches out from my spine, and put two small holes about 8″ from the outer edges of the shirt. I thought about using just the holes but decided I wanted the metal look of the grommets. I still may add some kind of metal or beading to the neck.

Anyway, I ran a strip of scrap fabric (the hem, actually) through the two grommets and tied the ends, cinching the waist (it’s hard to see the difference in this photo, I know).

I also darted it at the bust b/c of the sleeve removal. I was covered, which is unusual for a 2X w/ removed sleeves, but it gapped and looked odd w/o the darting.

I think I may add some long sleeves from an old colored t-shirt underneath, maybe green. I have one in mind. I’d need the sewing machine for that.

This was a no-sew repurpose. Other than scissors, all you need is a grommet set, although you could just cut a couple of holes. Next shirt I’m going to do more of a corset style up the back with a couple of holes or grommets for shaping.

Shirt is from Fortress Publishing.

  • I think green sleeves underneath would be cute.

  • Awesome!!! I have always wanted to do something similar with mannish/unisex boxy tees which look awful on me. Can you post a photo of the back?

  • I had a photo of the back but it wasn’t so good focus-wise. I think I’m going to fix the bust darts and I’ll try it on again & show the back. Like I said, it’s hard for me to do the photos b/c I need the light plus a place to put the camera, time to pose before the timer goes off, etc. Plus in that photo the ground was cool & damp and I was shoeless. So the light is good again today so I’ll try again.
