Perfect Post for April

I haven’t done a Perfect Post selection for a while but Jen’s post struck me as an instant winner:

No, I don’t love patchouli and wear hemp

In it, she writes about the innate desire humans have to connect to each other, to their surroundings and to themselves. She goes on to illustrate how humans continue to connect to other humans, mostly through our natures and not so much via our efforts, but that we would have to make an effort to connect to the earth and it’s an effort we seem to reject and embrace at the same time. We spend so much time indoors that we must make a conscious decision to go out and connect to nature — one living thing to another.

We both live in rural areas and I was particularly struck by her questioning the connection of the people in our areas to the land. That because we are dependent on the land for our economic survival that we should be the ones leading the way to environmental protection and preservation, Instead the status symbols in the culture (like the monster truck, snowmobiles, ATVs, etc.) contribute to the denigration of air, water and soil. She writes about what she does to decrease her family’s global footprint and I found her contributions inspiring, like Radical Mama’s series around Earth Day. They don’t have to be grand gestures; small things can make a huge impact. That’s why I thought this was a Perfect Post.
