Last night’s TV viewing: unacceptable

So Chez Piggyhawk was all hyped about “Idol Gives Back” b/c it would be live musical performance by people we’d heard of. Turned out it was a lot of unfunny “comedy,” Teri Hatcher singing instead of Carrie Underwood and lengthy shots of people in need. Sure, we needed to see the people the money would help but when we’re two hours in and there’s been exactly one decent musical performance (Heart)? It was time to change the channel. But b/c it was “Idol Gives Back” night, no one else was running anything of interest. Well, American Splendor was on IFC and John Adams Pt 8 was on HBO so if you like Paul Giamatti, you had a nice choice. I flipped back & forth between them for a while.

But Zoe liked the “Naughty children show,” which was Supernanny or whatever it’s called. You know, the show made to make you say, “Well at least my kids aren’t that bad.” Although I did see about ten minutes of the one w/ Wendy Wilson and I got the “binky-free day” idea and broke Zoe of the binky habit by using the method. So it might be a good show b/c Zoe liked telling me when the kids were being good or being naughty. Then she went on to say “Holden is being naughty. He needs a time-out. I’m being good because I’m coloring a picture and sitting quietly.” Which was true. Doesn’t matter b/c that’s usually Idol night.

Even music lover Hawk got fed up by 8 or so and he decided that doing the dishes was favorable to listing to AI. Apparently Annie Lennox performed, which I’m slightly sad to have missed b/c I dig her. But it wasn’t worth sitting through more time-wasting schlock to hear.

The show jumped the shark early with some person I’d never heard of literally screaming in our faces. Not words, just “Aaaaaa!” over and over again, telling me that if I didn’t send them money, she’d keep screaming. Let her scream herself hoarse for all I care. If I had intended to donate, the idea of someone screaming at me quashed that idea. Smart thinking, Idol. UNACCEPTABLE! See how that comes in handy?

But at least they did something about David Cook’s hair.

For better AI yumminess, check out this piece at EW online: 15 best (Idol) performances ever. #15 is Ruben. I’m only up to #13 (David’s “Billie Jean”) but I’m already more entertained than I was between 7:30 & 9:30 last night.

If you want to give to charity, why not send a little something to RAINN this month instead? That’s what I’ll be doing. At least they’re not screaming in my face and having Miley Cyrus sing twice.
