Crush groove
When I heard that Patrick Swayze has pancreatic cancer, I thought that I should write something about him before he died instead of after. So I thought I could kind of turn it into a Sexography entry about celebrity crushes and raise some dough for RAINN in the meantime (did you know that, in April every dollar donated to RAINN is matched?) Details on doing that are at the end of the post.
My first celebrity crush was Han Solo.

Not Harrison Ford. I was five years old. Who knew that there was an actor behind that person on the TV or movie screen? I loved Han Solo. He didn’t care what anybody thought about him and he did his own thing. I liked that. I still do. So how do we get from Han Solo to Joaquin Phoenix? Like this:
Also in the late 1970s, I developed a thing for Jack Tripper.

He was goofy and funny and I liked his hair. Most of the base of my sexual knowledge came from either CBS soaps, “Dallas” or “Three’s Company.”
I also liked the Duke boys:

I had a poster of them (and the car) in my room when I was probably 8 or 9. All the girls liked Bo. Therefore I had to like Luke. Not that I particularly preferred Luke (or Bo for that matter) but that I had to take the less popular or obvious choice.
I also liked Mork from Ork:

I can say that it’s because I thought he was hilarious and silly. I think it was actually due to those suspenders. I had a “Mork” outfit that came with the rainbow suspenders but the buttons on them weren’t right. One said “Mork From Ork,” which I thought was dumb. Mork would never wear flair with his name and home planet written on it. I destroyed the pants when I had a bike wreck while wearing them. But they saved my knees.
Then we move on to the 1908s, when I still enjoyed Han Solo but I got to add Indiana Jones to my list:

How much did I love Indy? I endured the snake scene to see it. To this day, I can get through the scene with a chamber full of snakes (even little squiggly ones) b/c Indiana Jones will protect me.
Then I was a Duranie:

I liked Simon but he was the Bo Duke of Duran Duran. Everybody liked Simon. Everybody liked Roger and John. Nobody really liked Andy (this is his best pic). Nick had the same “I don’t care what anyone thinks” attitude that I’d liked in Han Solo so I became a Nick girl. But in my heart, I wanted to change my name to Duranie LeBon.
Then after my D2 phase, I didn’t have a celebrity lust until North & South was on ABC. It was at that time I fell for the unknown actor with a Texas-cum-South-Carolina-for-the-show accent.

And I was fresh and alone on my celebrity crush. Then Dirty Dancing came along

and suddenly everyone shared my crush. Sure, I could get posters of him for my room (which I took to college and removed after Ghost made him Uberpopular) but he wasn’t mine any more. Still, he was just mine for a long time and I never stopped my crushing, even when he stopped making anything I was viewing.
I crushed on Kiefer Sutherland during the Young Guns period.

I had his poster up next to Patrick Swayze’s.
I didn’t have a lot of crushes in the mid-90s. Ben Affleck a little, maybe a dash of George Clooney. Then I saw Gladiator and I was very “Can we get this Maximus guy off the screen and go back to the emperor?” Then I sat through Quills and I knew.

I knew the way you know about a good melon.
And that’s how you get from Han Solo to Johnny Cash in thirty years.
=======================
With every Sexography entry comes the donation page for RAINN — Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network. Among its programs, RAINN created and operates the National Sexual Assault Hotline at 1.800.656.HOPE. RAINN provides information, education, outreach and other services. If you donate, please C&P my URL into the “donation in honor of” section (in addition to anyone you want to honor, including yourself) so that the project-related donations may be tracked (if you use Paypal, you don’t get that option so please let me know so that I can pass the info along to the project). In April, for every dollar you donate, RAINN will receive a matching donation. Your money goes further.
Thanks ![]()

I was just thinking of how Mork was one of mine, before I even scrolled down and saw he was one of yours too!
I also love John Ritter, at least, hot John Ritter from Three’s Company, he was lovable in 8 Simple Rules but more like, a dad, not a sex-slave.

Mmm…Duran Duran. They were one of my first crushes.

good melon! SNORT!
Christian Slater was really my only young crush. I was a little segmented from my crushes-I didn’t feel allowed to have any (now there is a post)
I did watch every single movie he was in however. Sadly.
My other celebrity crush was Angelina Jolie when I was like 17 I think…still have that one, although she’s a little gaunt for my tastes now. At the time, no one knew who she was, and now it seems so cliched…
I’ve always hated Swazye. Sorry!

Me too, Thor! She was awesome as Leggs in what-was-that-girl-power-movie? Firefox or something?
My major crush timeline, with some overlapping:
Superman/Christopher Reeves, Wonder Woman/Lynda Carter, Madonna, Kirk Cameron, Johnny Depp, Tom Cruise (yes it hurts to type it,) *cough* New Kids on the Block, Jim Morrison, Eddie Vedder, Trent Reznor, Angelina, Maggie G, Willow, Spike, Matthew McConaughey, Johnny Depp again- now with dreadlocks!
April 29, 2008 at 9:33 pm
Oh, jeez- and seriously ? How do I forget? Yes! I too was going to “Go to Europe, Marry Christian Slater, and Die.”
April 29, 2008 at 10:05 pm
Oh yeah, I liked Christopher Reeve around Superman II but not so much as to register among the crush contingent. But in my little diary of the time I wrote “Boy is he ever cute!” I should find that and scan it.
I don’t know what happened to me between like 1994 and 2000. I guess Hawk ruined me for all other men and that spell was broken by Joaquin and his +3 Angry Young Man Glare.

This was very entertaining. Got me thinking about my crushes. I did love Young Guns.
April 29, 2008 at 10:26 pm
We should start a meme of scans from old diaries!

I love love love Joaquin (even in not so popular movies like 8MM), but his older brother River had me twitterpated until he OD’d. Stand By Me, Running on Empty are two of my favorite movies. He is truly missed. Thanks for taking me back to the salad days….
April 29, 2008 at 11:48 pm
Yeah I dug River but I wasn’t hanging his picture on my walls (he was my bridge between pure looks and the talent crush). I did have the cast of The Outsiders up at some point b/c they came with my Teen Beat magazine. Except Ralph Macchio. I didn’t like him at all. But Matt Dillon, Kevin Bacon, that ilk, yeah. They were all coming around at that point. I thought Tom Cruise’s teeth were too weird. Hey, wasn’t Patrick Swayze in The Outsiders?
Oh! Between Indy & Duran Duran, I was in a brief Ricky Schroder phase. I remember a “centerfold” of a paparazzi-like shot of him standing in front of a waterfall in his swimming trunks. It was beside my bed. It was in “16″ b/c it had the “16″ logo in the corner.
Oh and of course we like Joaquin in 8mm. Here’s the post where I found out what I was missing and here’s the reaction:

Ooh, the Duke brothers were hot! Yes. And of course Joaquin as Johnny. Had a crush on Major Nelson in IDOJ, but not Larry as J.R. (Dallas) Liked Bobby though, yum. Don’t even remember the actor’s name now!
Very fun post.

Patrick Duffy. I seem to enjoy Patricks.
April 30, 2008 at 7:55 am
Oh my, this was so much fun to read.
I had a zillion teen crushes. Some of them are quite embarrassing, like I had a huge crush on Mackenzie Astin. Eek.
April 30, 2008 at 9:05 am
LOL @ melons!
I was a bit too young for the first few on your list, I started with Indy. Still love him.
I don’t really remember my crushes much. NKOTB, of course, and everyone loved Brad when Legends of the Fall came out.
Quills? OMG, I hate that movie. HATE. But other than that, Joaquin is hawt.
April 30, 2008 at 11:13 am
We are so the same age, aren’t we? I have to add Shaun Cassidy to that list, and take out Mork. I always thought George was way hotter than Orry, and my crush was on John of D2 and Luke Skywalker as opposed to Han Solo.
Now? It’s all about Gerard Butler. I would drink his bathwater.
April 30, 2008 at 12:05 pm
Yes, as an erotica writer and sometime rabblerouser, I was all over the concept of Quills. Moreover, I’m a Kate Winslet fan out the wazoo. At that point, I was only a moderate Joaquin fan but I was very keen to see Quills. And I was bored out of my mind. The only thing that kept me in the theater was Joaquin Phoenix. And then that flagellation scene? And then when he’s, ya know, with her… ya know, near the end? By that point I was like, “Honey, you like curvy, red-haired girls? I’m right here and I’m breathing and everything. And bring the costume.”
April 30, 2008 at 3:21 pm
I have to admit to a current Clive Owen thing, and Daniel Craig, and Robert Downey Jr (I would totally have more babies for him-crazy be damned)
May 1, 2008 at 8:12 am
I thought it was okay till Kate is murdered. Even though they didn’t show much, the thought made me sick to my stomach. I have a really hard time watching or imagining any violence of any sort.
But yeah, he DID look hot in that costume.

My very first celeb crush was - Ricky Nelson! Everyone was gaga over Elvis, I liked Ricky. Over the years: Cary Grant, that Beach Boys fellow, Dr. Kildare (the TV one not the old-time movie one), George Harrison (again, everyone gaga over Paul), Al Pacino, George Clooney.
Patrick Swayze - have you seen the one where he is dressed as a woman? I forget the title, something like “To Julie Newmar with love . . .”. That movie cracks me up!
May 1, 2008 at 3:23 pm
oh I forgot to add Mike Rowe fro Dirty Jobs…I don’t dare tell Mogo the real reason I watch that show…
I have to go fan myself down now. Pardon me.
And Daisy, I burned most of my old journals-I wish I had the one that talks about all the drugs I was doing!
May 1, 2008 at 4:56 pm
Even though I’m ancient, I share the crushes, most notable the Joaquin Phoenix one. When I saw a flick called “Clay Pigeons,” I wanted Vince Vaughn off the screen and more of “that other guy.” (and I liked Vince back then!)
My first actor crush was, don’t laugh too hard, Michael Landon, back when I was a kid and he was on Bonanza. He got better with age, too. ANd then I went on to Kurt Russell!
May 1, 2008 at 6:45 pm
There is no shame in a Michael Landon crush. Between the eyes & the Little House era hair, I’m with you on that one.
May 2, 2008 at 12:01 am
I loved Andy Taylor.
I think that’s when my “crushes on the underdog” pattern first took shape.
May 2, 2008 at 12:25 am
Ah, there’s always one.
