The Jaminator

We got our first computer in December 1999. I’d been writing on a Brother word processor and one of the first online things I did was find a writing group. I found a message board at a place I’ll call eVil. Most of the stories posted to the feedback boards were real crap. And no one was offering any constructive criticism. But I stuck around b/c every now & then, a great story or some real feedback would come through.

Then in, maybe January, someone posted a story for one of the “assignments” and she did a clever murder mystery in a short space. It was beautifully written, genuinely funny and the best thing I’d read yet on the boards. So I told her so and she became my first online friend. Her eVil id was “Jamandbread” so those of us who knew her when still tend to call her “Jam.” Or “Jamly.” I’m not sure where “Jamly” came from. Probably me.

So anyway…

I’m going to meet Jam at Erin’s wedding this weekend and I’m so excited I keep telling everyone. Most people are very “huh?” but people with online friends know that to meet your first online friend IRL is kinda special Plus Jam has touched Harrison Ford so I’m that much closer to my Han Solo fantasy come true. And this is Jam’s rarely updated blog. We chat just about every day so we’re very in touch. And excited. Did I mention excited?

Plus Erin’s getting married! Whee!

  • I’m excited. Take photos! And avoid bunnies falling from the sky! ;-)

  • Whee, indeed! I’m so excited that you guys are going to be there. Plus, three of us in the same place. How cool is that?

I’m pretty sure YOU were my first online friend…hard to recall, b/c I “met” several of you around the same time. You saw the snark, and you pounced. Heehee.

  • Yeah it all kind of snowballed after Jam but I distinctly remember her “Soup To Nuts” story and going, “Not only does this not suck but it’s damn good!” And then I found more people who could really write (you, Theryn, Deo, etc.) and then I had lots-n-lots of “friends with the fake names,” as Hawk used to say. And now I have blogfriends too.

    Teh Intrawebz is cool!11!1!!

  • I’m jealous! But I’ve met Theryn so there! :) Take some good shots of her, she’s very camera shy! Have a GREAT wedding, Erin! Fun fun fun!

  • I can’t wait to see Eden, and I can’t wait to see Erin again too :) . I expect it will be a blast.

(Yikes, you’re pimping my rather unattended blog… Ok, slipped in an update just for you, Eden. Yes, we really did see the one it’s based on…)
