Minor chord, major lift

My first online identity was “Sallie.” SAL are my initials, hence “Sallie.” Some people (*cough* Deoris *cough*) thought I was a dude named “Sal.” Almost ten years later, I still find that amusing.

I picked “Eden” as an ID for a couple of reasons. One being that I liked the name and Hawk didn’t. So when it went off the baby name list, I grabbed it up for myself. I liked the meaning — “wilderness” — and frankly I enjoyed taking something with a definite connotation and making it my own. Which is one reason why if Holden had been a girl, he likely would have been “Delilah.”

So anyway…

I’ve had trolls from time to time accuse me of I-don’t-know-what by using a pseudonym. The trolls seem to think they’re clever by knowing my name. It’s no secret. If I wanted to be secret online, that’s easy enough. And before anyone gets excited, no I don’t have a secret blog, twitter account, FB page or anything. My online space is a pretty easy one to find and follow (and followed it is).

So since my Real Name (le gasp) is kind of Out There in the world, I’ve considered changing my blog ID to to reflect it. I don’t really get the extra layer of anonymity and protection from before people mentioned me in their rants against the music industry (I haven’t seen any that go the other way or I’d acknowledge them as well). So it seems kind of silly to keep going by “Eden” here. I think it’s a good time to make the switch since I can’t be accused of trying to get blog traffic or something via an influx of seearchers following a news story or something. Although I’m sure I’ll be accused of it anyway. You know how I’m so hungry for blog traffic. You know, with my ad-free blog ‘n’ ‘at.

I know that to many, many of my online friends, that’s my name and what they’ll always call me — same as how my oldest online friends call me “Sallie” or “Sal” — and I will always answer to it. And I do like the special — would you call it an in-joke? — connection that creates. But signing comments at blogs and writing here under a name that would make some people go “wait, who?” just isn’t my bag baby.

So I figure I might as well be tits-out and identify as “Stephanie” here & around the web, when relevant. Unless of course it’s in relation to my erotica writing, as my erotica pseudonym is and will remain “Eden.”

Maybe I’ll just change my middle name. Hrm. Then I’d be SEL. That makes no sense at all.

  • Can I call you Steffie? :P

  • However you term yourself, you are still 4 shades of nifty in my book! Having been used to people who had different names for Pagan, SCA, role-playing and/or other persona, it is rare for me to know folks who have only 1 way that they are known.

  • You’re always “Sallie” in my head, but I often refer to you as Eden when speaking/writing about you b/c that’s how most people “know” you. But I agree w/Michael above…whatever you call yourself, you’re made of awesome. ;)

  • Ever since I figured out your name is Stephanie, I think of you with that name (my youngest sister is also Stephanie, and I love the name.) So, the transistion is very easy for me! Whatever moniker you choose, you’re still the same funny, snarky, smart blogger/Facebooker, and I’ll continue to enjoy your postings. It’s great to be online buds with you.

  • I still call you my baby ;)

  • As long as they don’t call you too late for supper, you’re fine. Hnyuck-nyuck-nyuck.

  • Well, I don’t think you’re a GUY now! But I do still say “Sal”. Sometimes I even say “Saledenza” So there’s both just for you. No matter the name, you’re better’n sliced bread.

  • Wow, big move! A very strong move too, given the attention, positive and negative, that has surrounded you.

  • I wondered about all this name shifting over the years!

I’ve been lurking since that Sal days!
